It seems silly, but a lot of us freelancers struggle to celebrate our wins. Without the built-in support of more traditional employment, it’s easy to feel on your own through it all: the setbacks and the wins. But how can we keep a positive mindset and healthy relationship with work if we don’t share our experience with others? Over the years I’ve been guilty of making big accomplishments, yet telling no one about them, except maybe my partner or sister (#grateful). I think it just kind of happens. Sometimes I keep it to myself because I don’t think my personal circle will understand the significance. Other times I do it unintentionally–since no one was there to pat me on the back, I pretty much nod and move on. Either way, celebrating your wins is important in any job and I want to share a few ways freelancers can go about it.
1. Tell a friend even if you’re pretty sure they don’t get it. Sometimes I’ll meet a significant goal or take a big risk that it seems only other self-employed professionals would understand. It just feels weird to bring it up to friends or family–it’s not that I don’t think they’ll support me, I just don’t want to bring up a topic that not everyone is as jazzed up about. That’s so silly. I would hate for my loved ones to think they couldn’t come to me, thrilled to have done X, even if their line of work is absolutely foreign to me. I’d miss out on so much! If your circle is the right circle for you, they ALL want to hear your wins.
2. Treat yourself. Hit ‘place order’ on a new biz investment that you’ve wanted but felt was out of reach. Big or small. Totally practical or just ’cause it inspires you (also totally practical). Or take your own personal day (you’re self-employed, DO NOT FEEL GUILTY!!!!), focused on self care and creative growth. You know it’ll only make you better when you get back to your desk.
3. Reflect on it. Journaling is one of my favorite and most effective self care activities, but it’s easy to turn to it *only* when I’m stressed or something has gone wrong that I need to just get off my chest. Every once in awhile, though, I’ll remember, hey, I’m excited! And inspired! And proud of myself! What a cool feeling, I should write about it. So I’ll write it out, for no one but myself. It’s kind of like giving yourself a little hug. I love extending the excitement this way.
4. Remind yourself that this isn’t your only win. You are “winning” every day by showing up and making a career on your own terms. Sometimes it seems like *everyone* is freelancing. It’s simply not true! It’s super freaking cool that you are out there on your own, working your a$$ off for something you believe in, and supporting yourself (and maybe others) in the process. Woah.
