We’ve entered into a new year, which for many of us means putting those resolutions into action (and a lot of time spent questioning how you could possibly stay motivated.) The month of January, somewhere along the line, was dubbed as the unofficial time each year we give ourselves a reboot—a new beginning to refocus on our goals and start fresh once again. While some are focused on improving their wellness routine and following a healthy diet (anyone else doing Veganuary?), others are promising to make career changes and economic shifts to inch closer towards achieving their dreams.
Not to rain on the post-New Year’s parade made up of a crowd of ambitious warriors who swear this year is “their year,” but tackling resolutions is not an easy feat. Narrowing down our goals is simple, but following through long-term is a whole other ballgame. Don’t fret, as there are ways to remain on track and continue down the pathway of success. Below are four ways to stay motivated about your goals and turn them into a reality for the long haul.
PROACTIVE WAYS TO STAY MOTIVATED…
Remove anything that doesn’t serve you
Do you recall the phrase, “out of sight, out of mind?” Think of that as it pertains to items in your home that aren’t helping you achieve your goals. I’m referring to the plethora of snacks in the pantry for those vying to clean up their diet or the clutter that’s distracting you from focusing within your work-from-home space. Look at the things surrounding you that could be a distraction from your goals and get rid of them. By removing anything that doesn’t serve you, you’re eliminating the temptation of slipping back into your old ways.
Write messages and mantras to yourself on sticky notes
Yes, this is a bit old-fashioned for the digital age, but acquiring a pen and paper to jot down little reminders for yourself is a helpful strategy in the long run. And having sticky notes on hand is even better as you can place them anywhere you might need a motivation boost. Need to steer clear of that secret candy stash? Stick a slip on the closet door, reminding yourself of all the hard work you’ve put in and not to give up! Or use a note to give yourself a pep talk in the morning. May I suggest placing a sticky note on your mirror or laptop with the words “YOU GOT THIS!”? Corny, but efficient.
Talk it out when you feel stuck
With any new challenge comes setbacks, frustrations, and feelings of utter defeat, but don’t let these moments deter you from moving forward. When you find it hard to stay motivated, realize that obstacles are meant to show you what you can overcome, not to veer you off course completely. The best thing during those unsettling times is to talk it out. Call a family member, a friend, a neighbor, or a colleague and vocalize your concerns. Just hearing your worries come out of your mouth could be enough to clear your mind to get back into the game. On the other hand, someone else’s perspective could help you view your anxieties differently and offer a renewed outlook that you couldn’t see on your own.
Schedule small rewards on your calendar
A huge motivating factor for people of all ages to work towards something is the reward offered at the finish line. The Price Is Right wouldn’t be the same without the Range Rovers and vacation villas. And parents would have an even harder time getting their children to behave in doctor’s offices without the sweet bonus of a lollipop after the visit. Adopt this exact procedure as extra motivation for yourself by scheduling small rewards on your calendar. Mark a specific day you’ll treat yourself to a cupcake from your favorite bakery or a facial at the new day spa in town. You’re more likely to push through the difficult days if you know there is even a little reward at the end.
