Have you noticed lately that all of the best board games have gotten modern upgrades? Jenn and I are always having those “have you seen this, I love it…” “yes, me too!!!!” moments over slack when we see new trends, which is pretty much how we came up with our whole fun with trends series. No layers of meaning behind these posts, just fun trend reports on things that we’re suckers for, even though yeah, they’re kinda silly and most people will lose interest in it once the hype fades. I guess that’s what design is all about? Getting excited about things, and seeing them in a new light, even if they’re not necessarily new.

Anyway, the other day I put this concept called “board games gone chic” on the calendar, and around the same time Jenn was like, we should do a post on modern board games! Very exciting backstory, I know. Truly, there are so many fun iterations of classic board games on the market now, that would elevate any game room! How fun would it be to receive a gift this nostalgic…yet chic?
Here’s a closer peek at the customizable Colorful Acrylic Chess + Checkers from Mark & Graham. What a dreamy iteration of two of the best board gams!
I don’t think I’ve even seen a set of Dominoes since I was about seven years old and would play with my grandpa. If only I had seen these Lucite Dominoes back then — I’d probably still be playing!
I’d buy this pretty pastel Raffia Backgammon… even though I never learned to play. It comes in a pretty blue and navy, plus a pickleball themed design too!
Bright citrus hues look so cheery in this Modernica Props Connect Four set!
While not technically a board game, this Irrelevant Celebrity Trivia looks like a fun group game for literally all of my friends to beat me in.
Why are traditional playing cards so boring? I’ll take these Fredericks and Mae rainbow playing cards any day!
Another board game from Mark & Graham that can be personalized, this pastel Monopoly set is definitely the prettiest version I’ve ever seen. If I get it, I’ll have to invest in their version of the best board game ever, Scrabble, too!
Printworks Market has the prettiest classic board games, including this pink Chess set, pick up sticks, Chinese checkers, and Yahtzee.
The La Pinta Card Set from Luxe Dominoes comes in a bevy of neon hues!
So many fun modern board games for the chicest gift givers! So, what should I do first? Revisit Dominoes or learn backgammon?
