Occasionally we have a quick chat with a fellow creative biz owner, to learn about their routines in life and work. Through this series, we’ll shed light on the many ways there are to run a business while uncovering the role self care plays in building a biz you love, and doing meaningful work. See our last interview here.
This week we chatted with Calgary-based Haley Kennedy, owner and artist at Shop Sundae Studios all about her biz, work life, and self care. Keep reading for her tips!
Years in business: 2
Do you run your business full-time? Yes and so happy to be able to!
Where you work: Home.
Tell us about your average workday
I’m a freelance illustrator and graphic designer. My average workday consists of making lists, reviewing client projects, packing shop orders, and of course includes a matcha latte 🙂
What does self care mean to you?
To me, self care means finding balance (especially this year!). Taking time (even a small amount) to reconnect with myself so that I can continue to do what I love, while also showing a little extra love for myself along the way.
How do you fit self care into your workday?
I always try to work self care practices into my daily routine wherever I can. Whether that’s going for a short walk outside, eating a nutritious meal, making sure to stay hydrated. Quick meditation sessions have also been great for me first thing in the morning or whenever I need to refresh during the day.
Hope do you cope with isolation as a business owner?
It’s tough, but I’m so grateful to have such a wonderful community of people online to connect with, including Self Care Is For Everyone.
WE THINK THAT SELF CARE LOOKS DIFFERENT ON EVERYONE, AND YOU SHOULDN’T WORRY IF SOMETHING DOESN’T BRING YOU RELIEF. Talk about a “self-care activity” you’ve tried that just doesn’t work for you:
I’ve tried so many forms of self-care but can never get into super intense workouts or running and much prefer things like yoga or other forms of gentle movement.
For creatives, a lot of times our work is a form of self-care… We create because it brings us joy and calm. What do you do when the act of creating becomes stressful?
When I begin to find creating stressful, it’s a big signal that I need to take a step back and take a break… Then I can come back to it refreshed.
Your favorite self-care related Instagram account and why:
@selfcarespotlight & @selfcareisforeveryone are so great for both daily self-care reminders and resources 🙂
When I’m overwhelmed I… take a step back, take a breath, and take a break.
My happy place is… curled up on couch with my cat and a good book/crochet project, baking in the kitchen, or on a beach somewhere 😉
My current favorite book is… is Badass Habits by Jen Sincero
