Like most trends, I am a few years late to falling in love with terrazzo. In the beginning, I didn’t see what all the fuss was about. I think I glazed over most of the terrazzo tables and tiles because they generally popped up in neutral hues, with hints of oranges and browns, and, well, you know me. Or perhaps it was that terrazzo “inspired” prints began showing up in anything from Society6 bath mats to wallpaper, which rarely seemed to do this 500+ year-old-craft any justice.
Enter Kentholz. Berlin-based (with a workshop in The Netherlands) Kentholz produces handcrafted sustainable furniture made of wood and terrazzo.
Each piece is more like a blend of different types, techniques, and textures, resulting in a sort of organized chaos, which just so happens to be a smattering of all my favorite colors. And the wood is very carefully selected, one by one, and lovingly restored.
Their terrazzo makes paintings of mosaic… textured, yet it flows like watercolor.
Dreamy comes to mind again and again! Visit kentholz.com (@kentholz) for more photos and stories behind these terrazzo tables.
And now that I can fully appreciate the mosaic technique of terrazzo (and its sustainable roots in re-purposing marble pieces), I’ve found other iterations that I really, really love. I recently posted about this pink terrazzo vase I purchased. And until I realized the measurements weren’t a fit for my space, I was hung up on this terrazzo side table. (Sigh, I probably wouldn’t have been able to decide between the pink or green, anyway.)
