If you’re a millennial reading this, the thought of a sweater dress probably sends you back your college days, wearing a shapeless long dress cinched with a belt, and an over worn pair of leggings. If you were really stylish, you topped it all off with a chunky infinity scarf (fun fact: I crocheted and sold them on Etsy in college) layered over a very long necklace chain with an enormous pendent (mine were usually crystals). At least that’s what comes to mind for me. It may not have been the most revered fall trend of our era, but it certainly was the coziest.
Thankfully, the sweater dress has come a long way since those times, and what’s making the rounds here in 2026 are more thoughtfully designed (though no less comfortable), whether their fits are drapey and flowing or fitted and feminine. There are just more details, even if subtle: buttons, bows, collars, and the texture you want from a sweater.
